John H. Childress, 82, of DeLand, Florida, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024. Born on May 30, 1942, in Franklin, Tennessee, John was raised on a farm. In his early twenties he developed a deep love for art and furniture. These passions would eventually shape his successful career and life’s journey.

John was a prominent furniture and bedding manufacturer's representative in Florida for over 40 years. His career began at Jamison Upholstery in his hometown of Franklin, where he first found his calling in the upholstery business. Later, he was offered a significant opportunity to develop and expand Jamison's territory in Florida, a challenge he embraced with enthusiasm and success. John's contributions to the furniture industry included introducing innovative products such as waterbeds, massage chairs, and adjustable bed bases, becoming a key figure in their rapid growth. He continued working in the industry well into his seventies, building a legacy of dedication and excellence.

Outside of work, John was an adventurer with a love for the slopes. A black diamond downhill skier, he frequently enjoyed trips to Colorado and Utah, challenging himself on the most difficult runs. In his mid-fifties, John fulfilled a lifelong dream by purchasing a small horse farm in DeLand, where he trained for competitive cutting horse events. He spent over a year searching for the perfect horses, dedicating himself to the craft and community of cutting horse enthusiasts.

John was also an avid golfer and tennis player, often enjoying these sports in his spare time. He cherished vacations at the Tryall Club near Montego Bay, Jamaica, and was a connoisseur of fine wine, especially Cabernet. Every year, he traveled to Napa and Sonoma Valley vineyards to indulge in his passion for wine before his health declined. When John could no longer attend live concerts of his favorite artists like The Eagles, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, and Eric Clapton, he continued the tradition by hosting weekly "concerts" at home with his extensive DVD collection.

John is survived by his loving wife, Paula Zeikle Childress; his daughter, Rhonda Childress Bachman, and her husband Tim; his sister, Elaine Childress Green, her children Erik and Holly and their families; and his sister-in-law, Patricia Zeikle Stafford, her husband Brian, and their daughter Sydney. He was the son of Reedy and Juanita Childress.

John was known for his laid-back demeanor, his gentlemanly nature, and his strong code of integrity. He loved fine dining and was known as a generous tipper, always showing respect for others and disdaining unnecessary drama. One of his favorite sayings was, "You've gotta know when to hold 'em, and know when to fold 'em," reflecting the wisdom he brought to both life and his many friendships.

In keeping with his wishes, John chose cremation and requested that his loved ones celebrate his life with intimate gatherings over great dinners, toasting him with a fantastic Cabernet. His wife Paula will be traveling to meet with many of John’s friends across the country to honor his memory in this special way.
